Ruhinga Village School

We first connected with Ruhinga Village Preschool in 2014 when Mountain View director, Deb Mitchell and her family spent the year in Rwanda, Africa. During their year in Rwanda, Deb and her husband, Stuart, worked as teacher trainers and were deeply impacted by Rwanda’s Justice & Reconciliation Process which is imbedded in the national curriculum, and into all aspects of Rwandan life. Through programs like Umuganda, perpetrators and victims of the 1994 genocide now live and work side by side in peace.

Ruhinga Village School was started by Elsie Hitimana as a way to show love to the people in the village where she was raised. Elsie’s Story of reconciliation with her neighbors in the aftermath of Rwanda’s 1994 genocide, during which most of her family was killed, is an incredible testament to the power of forgiveness and love.

Elsie recognizes that the key to ending the cycle of darkness and intolerance is through education.  It is her vision to build a K-12 school in her home village, and we are so privileged to help her fulfil that goal!  At Mountain View, we participate in fundraising for Ruhinga Umucyo Christian Academy through weekly coin donations, and through our yearly Love Your Neighbour Dance-A-Thon.
